Just a thought. But the robots he built were along the same lines as toys from his dad’s company. To the point that they had the company plaque on them.
What if all his stuff originates as toys for his dad’s company?
Also, turning his design skills to civilian use would be part of rehab wouldn’t it?

Ok, so I can see this going two ways:
1) She wants to believe him but he’s building weapons again.
2) It’s really just for toys but she becomes increasingly suspicious and ends up escelating the situation.
What I hope happens: She confides in a third party and this person looks into his activities.
