Saving the City: Sans-Spandex

Far more excited for the pizza I am about to consume than I need to be.

The Actual Mr B has informed me that “a piece” is a current teen-speak when referring to a very cute person.

I sought input when I first typed something along the lines of “that new kid, super cute, amirite?” and then remembered that there is NO WAY that that is correct, because I am OLD.

    Dude. Stop.

The older teen Break is also a piece. However, her attitude is ugly… Admittedly, we don’t know all the history between these two; they’ve been in what, two scenes ‘on camera’? Still, someone’s got a massive chip on her shoulder.

See, that was my initial impression, too. But I was wrong and I shouldn’t have said that. Too often women and girls (esp POC) are told they have to be NICE about things, that what they have to say isn’t valid unless they’re NICE about it. No she shouldn’t have flipped him off in the classroom, but that’s so far down the list of things to be concerned about.

What she’s done (that we know of) is 1) knocked over his sandcastle in kindergarten (when, or maybe sometime after that he swore vengeance on her until the end of time), 2) destroyed the giant robot he was going to wreck the city with and apprehended him, 3) told him she was watching him, and 4) warned her friends about him. Since they’re nemeses, it’s pretty reasonable to guess that she had a hand in his other arrests, too.

What he’s done (that we know of) is 1) built a giant robot, 2) hired other Evil Scientists to work on his project, taking other scientists hostage, 3) hired a paramilitary force and giant mutant/monster guy that took a six person team to take down, and put Val in the hospital, 3) built ANOTHER giant robot to smash up the city. And then in the 4-5 years since then has gotten out of juvie, crimed AGAIN, went back, and got out again, minimum once.

You’d warn your friends away from him, too. And it’s not like she’s following one step behind him screaming about everything he’s done. She just told them he’s trouble and they’re better off staying away. Any idea that his right to “normal socialization and development” is MORE important than the right of those girls to not interact with a violent person is straight up incel bullshit.

There is something else that is bothering me. Break seems to be stalking him. She greeted him on his release in costume and told him that she got her parents to enroll her in the school he’d be going to. There is a lot of speculation in the comments on the second page of this arc so this is as far as I’m going down that hole.

This is, at the time of posting, the current published page. This is currently the place to discuss the arc. Which will be done with civility and thoughtfulness. Failure to do so will result in posts being removed.

Racism and Misogyny will not be tolerated. In the interest of allowing posters to have their thoughts, we allowed too many borderline statements to go unchecked, and for that, we apologize. We had hoped that reminders to play nice and the ability to ask questions to clarify cannon would keep discussion on track, as it has done in the past. We were obviously VERY wrong.

Some posters may feel that there were elements of the deleted posts worth discussing. If so, you are welcome to state your opinions on those topics, in accordance with common decency. Fans have discussed a lot of Heavy Topics on this comic in the last 13 years, and we know you have a lot of interesting things to say.

This our house. We will have good guests in our house.

Now, let’s have a good time. If you’re reeeally lucky, maybe you will get a good job detention with Mr B. He is real. He is watching.

In the interest of battling ACTUAL systemic oppression against ACTUAL people, Sidekick Girl is making a donation to the ACLU. If you have the ability, there are a lot of good charities dedicated to helping people through all the Everything we are dealing with right now.

On the current page. It seems the classmates are less impressed by Break than they are the ‘new kid’. As it appears the dark looks are aimed her way and not his.

Just trying to troubleshoot the very frustrating comments problem we cannot seem to fix.

Wow this story arc really blew up in the comments section didnt it?I consider this plot to be a friendly reminder that you dont actually have to be a good person to be classed as a hero in this universe. In fact such a personality trait might be a mild disadvantage given how the agencies like to run things and maintain the status quo =).

  • Nealithi on June 3, 2020 at 6:07 AM

Oddly there is one question I have been waiting on. How is a child or teen a hero at all? In this setting it has been made abundantly clear you need training and certification to be a hero or sidekick. Since I have yet to see a bad story arc here, I am waiting to see the conclusion here.

  • The Passing Critic on June 3, 2020 at 7:42 AM

Though theres an official track for most heros and sidekicks to train to become heros you have to remember that the hero agency is most interested in profit from merchandising and the like rather than actually fighting crime-In fact I imagine the only reason hero courses etc exist is so the agency can scrape a ton of money from all the applicants while picking out the ones who are most merchandisable.

Meanwhile in Breaks case as a kid shes extremely merchandisable and can be sold easily to another demographic which means more money,I imagine that they have a lot of red tape in place to cut down on dead kids but that red tape dissapears when the word profit comes up (Its kind of like how Illumina for the longest time both powers and intellectwise had no business being a hero but as a legacy hero shed be a big money spinner for the agency so she repeatedly got paired up with sidekicks whod do all the heavy lifting for her while she looks sexy for the cameras).

That said Im guessing til recently Breaks probably had a lot of heros forcibly teamed up with her since her powers a little hyperspecialised.Maybe one of the reasons Breaks trying to get her ex nemesis back into the game is that without giant mechas and the like to break her popularitys taken a hit(especially since shes closer to the end of the kid hero section of her career so soon all shell be is an adult hero with a powerset so hyperspecific that without a regular supply of things to break shes essentially a sidekick in everything but name).Yeah I dont consider break to be a good person-At best i consider her a person whos been spoiled by becoming a hero at such a young age.

  • Ragnarok101 on June 3, 2020 at 3:20 PM

Okay so does this arc have a scheduled point at which it will be done? Because I think I’m going to take a long break from it and read it all at once, because Break’s behavior is infuriating for several reasons to me and if I have to be drip-fed her being like this over the course of weeks I will probably say something stupid in the comments.

  • Livvy on June 4, 2020 at 5:23 PM

Did you have the same issue with the Dark, Ragnarok?

  • Ragingagnostic on July 9, 2021 at 12:18 PM

Oh brother. If these are your typical stupid adolescent girls, she’s just made him a thousand times more attractive by stating that he’s a bad boy.
