Sidekick Girl

Saving the City: Sans-Spandex

Mack is sooo shiiiny...

The Winner! We were originally going to redraw the winning entry in our style, but we decided that the art was good enough on its own to post as is. So congrats to Tower15! His explanation of the costume is in the contest entries thread on the forum.

Also, this should have been up hours ago, but I did the file wrong and didn’t notice until now. Oops.

    Well deserved!

I will say that with the reasoning behind it given she should have some more leg protection, though with those pants it could be underneath.

‘we decided that the art was good enough on its own to post as is’?
    No KIDDING!
That is stunning work, for both characters.

Mike–I agree: with loose enough cargo pants, lightweight kneepads would actually be more comfortable and less restrictive when worn underneath them. I actually wear knee protection for loading cargo aircraft, and when they’re worn outside the pants inevitably bunch up in strange and non-comfortable ways.
(Plus, of course, rule-of-cool has to be applied, even to super-practical Val–this looks much better than exposed kneepads would look).

Again, kudos to the artist, this is just gorgeous, and the reasoning behind it is solid.

Wow, that is such awesome art! Definitely “good enough” 😀

Oh, my, looks like Val is putting the stress test on that spandex! I say in the name of the ASPCA, those puppies need to be free! (^__^)/

You mean ‘Mack’, not Val, but your point is well-taken.
    ^_^

On the other hand, the ‘Distraction Factor’ is what the shiny pink spandex is all about, so it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to be doing.

  • CptNerd on January 4, 2013 at 10:14 AM

Ah, yes you’re right, I tend to lose track of names in the 80+ webcomics I read! ^_^ As to detraction, I suppose a lot of time is spent wondering when (and anticipating when) the spandex finally gives way…

    “Distraction” not “detraction.” Yeesh…

For some reason, I’m getting a Seventh Doctor and Ace feel from this picture; granted, Sylvester McCoy is far from being a big ol’ busty woman, and his incarnation of the Doctor was far from dim, even in his early days, but it’s just this feel…plus, Ace was never a pushover. Not invincible, but definitely not a pushover.

Very good choice, and congrats to Tower15 for drawing this up so well. 🙂

Val’s dress. Dayum! Now THAT is a scary looking sidekick if I’ve ever seen one.

I like the juxtaposition of girly & grrly…

I think the hem of Val’s pants are too low. She could wind up tripping on them. But other than that, it’s a fine costume, serviceable, tough, functional and the dark colors mean bloodstains won’t show up as much.
