Proper “Ninja mesh” is a form of armor made from coated wire. It’s flexible enough to bend and flex with the wearer through various acrobatics, does not squeak or clang if it bumps into anything, and, (because stealth is still prioritized way above damage absorption) may even occasionally deflect thrown knives, stars, or edged weapons, or at least enough to turn a severe injury into a minor scratch. It’s not going to save anyone from a full-force solid hit, but it can help turn a partial dodge into a successful one.
All that being said, I get the impression that THESE ninja, in this universe, are seriously wearing common string fishnet material… probably because they don’t know shit about REAL shinobi. ^_^
