Saving the City: Sans-Spandex

However, training your dice to roll high by putting them on their 20s is a definite real thing that definitely works.

1) The cat is Smoosh, one of Laura’s cats. She has a clipped ear from when she was fixed as a stray, and also very many toes!

2) All pets love James.

3) The exchange at the top actually happened, pretty much right like that (except I’m the DM. We were at Jane’s house, though.)

4) Arson is not the answer was not added to the rules because of only ONE attempt of Gnora’s to solve a problem with fire. However, a NEW RULE has been added to the table, which is: “don’t make things worse!”

5) Owen can be counted on for a post-it at all times.

How can any player have so little information her can get away with only eight notes and a character sheet?
And only eight dice? I would have had to stop at the store on my way to the game if I was that low.

One character sheet, yes, but we don’t know how many PAGES that sheet is. My custom AD&D sheets were usually four 8.5×11 pages, printed on ledger stock at a copy place and folded, giving a handy “inside” for additional sheets for extra equipment or detailed spell lists. The level of organization shown here would easily support something like this.

As for the dice, it’s a BIT low, but I never had THAT many of any size dice for D&D. For Shadowrun, on the other hand, I just had a massive sack of D6s, with perhaps six or eight nicely decorative dice, a dozen smaller dice for easy rolling, and several packs worth of bog-standard “Yahtzee” dice for when something big came up, and I needed ALL the dice pools. But then Shadowrun was pretty much all about handfuls of dice.

(One time when dealing with a dragon CLAIMING to be Dunkelzahn springs to mind. He threatened my (female) character’s child, and I started picking up dice. “Six dice in Mana Bolt, combat pool dice, magic pool dice… haven’t used karma pool dice, so that’s eight more…” *begins rolling a massive pile of dice from hand to hand* “No, I realize I’m not taking out a Great Dragon with a Mana Bolt, but he’s gonna FEEL it, and after he kills me my child will be safe.” *GM hastily backpedals* 😉 )

The fold out character sheet sounds awesome. Best we get is two sided and multi page. (And somehow always lose pages.)
But I need a crown royal bag of dice. Minimum five d20’s so the GM does not declare them loaded when I crit something.
    Miss that. . .

T’Renn, as a mother, gamer, and teacher…. I salute your character choice in that game.

EXCUSE ME! Arson most certainly IS the answer.

I’ve been playing using D&D Beyond. So far I really like it. It seems kind of strange to only carry an iPad, and a bag of dice to game, but so far, so good.

There is a world of difference between what you keep on the table and what you brought to the game. 🙂

I got by just fine with one of each kind of die (2d10 for the rare % roll), a pencil, and a 1-page character sheet.
At my feet would be my Players’ Handbook and Unearthed Arcana.
But nearby woud be a air of milk crates with all my books, my box-o-dice, about 100 spare pencils (so I could loan some), … post-its, colored pens, scrap paper, graph paper (in multiple scales), ….
    WAY too much stuff, actually.

It was worse on the nights we played at the hobby store, since the game was not 100% guaranteed so I woud bring books for other games.
“My DM didn’t show, what are you guys playing and can I join?”
    “Sure. Twilight2000.”
“”Cool, I’ve got the book. I’ll have a character in 15 minutes”.

So many good intersectional nerd comments!

As a player, I can fit pretty much anything on a single front and back character sheet, if I need to. Ideally, I have a folder or report cover thingie with the character sheet, the spreadsheet with my equipment, an XP sheet, and the full text of spells/feats/abilities etc for quicker reference than looking them up in the book, but 90% of what I need is on the front page of the sheet. I have the players handbook and can also look up the SRD on my phone. My dicebag has pens and pencils. I have a ton of dice, but I take out a few at the start and fish out additional as I need them, or as I need to retire certain dice for the day. And a notebook to track HP, treasure, and take notes in.

I have my game bag with additional books, binders, old sheets, cards, etc.

As a DM, I fit everything I need in a small tub, because it needs to be compact. I print out monsters as I need them for the session. I have my laptop for quick rules reference, and a youtube playlist for background music. I have a few organizers of minis. My mini collection is pretty sparse, by most standards. I have a binder of necessary stuff, a DM screen that I’ve not used yet, and the initiative tracker and maps. Extra writing sticks and dry erase markers and a dedicated mat wiping rag that is bright ass blue from the days when wet erase vinyl maps were the way to go. Secondary dice bag.

Then in my purse, I have my emergency gaming kit: one set of dice, one dry erase marker, and four page protectors with a one inch grid on one side and a quarter inch grid on the other. With the SRD on my phone and a handful of change for minis, I could run a game at ANY GIVEN MOMENT. It’s never come up yet….but it will, someday, and I’ll be prepared…
