Sidekick Girl

Saving the City: Sans-Spandex

So...punchable...

Anyone wanna explain to my laggy computer that while I know that it is tired, and wants to sleep, it is time to comic, and it just needed to keep up a leeeettle longer?

Anyway, who’s coming to Penguicon?  We’re less than a month out, now, and super excited!  If you’re coming, you should say something in the forum, or on the facebook page.

Are sidekicks allowed to smack some attitude adjustment on their supers? Just to align them properly to the circumstances, you know, no major contusions or broken bones? ‘Cause I sense that SOMEONE needs to not just chill, but be chilled. All in the name of amity.

No way the streets are alive all the time! Sometimes it really is kinda quiet… I was there for a mtg grand prix, I know.

For Shiver, I think it’s less how awesome LA is and how not-awesome Metro City is.

  • Lala on April 6, 2016 at 7:31 AM

The speech bubbles in the last panel are a little confusing. The first bubble is Val and the last two are supposed to be Shiver, right?

  • Lala on April 6, 2016 at 7:34 AM

    Ooh, scratch my last comment.

  • Black Rose on April 6, 2016 at 8:20 AM

Who feels a smack down coming between Val and Shiver???
    Place your bets folks…!

  • Ragingagnostic on April 6, 2016 at 3:01 PM

No matter how much Val may be tempted to hurt this guy, she has to restrain herself. He’s only temporary so she just has to hang on until Mack returns. If she gets a reputation of attacking her supers (no matter how deserving), she might get a reprimand or worse. At least, he’s taking her seriously as a sidekick, even if he’s dismissive of her town and her costume. Besides, Val has faced much more than mere condescension or contempt from a super. Has she not had people trying to kill her? What’s a little scorn from some pretty-boy outsider compared to that?

All we need do is sit back and wait. Some supervillain will come along and either clean the floor with this bastard, thus soothing Val’s anger, or Shiver will prove that he really does deserve the title of superhero and earn Val’s grudging respect. (Remember that Mack was fairly useless to Val in the beginning, so a useful superhero has got to be an improvement.)

I want to smack Shiver just for all the “like” and “amirite” peppered in his dialogue.

  • Sidekickgirl on April 6, 2016 at 2:05 PM

    My work here is done.

    *CRASH* THUNDERDOUCHE!

  • Lukkai on April 6, 2016 at 8:40 PM

He’s not really right. Not fully wrong either. But most of all, he’s just a prick right now.

I’m from the greater Los Angeles area. And I have one thing to say to mister “I love the night life.”

    Three Words.
    New. York. City.

  • Ed Rhodes on April 12, 2016 at 4:55 PM

He got “sent” here and didn’t want to come. So yeah, everything’s going to suffer in comparison to his view of Los Angeles. I have to imagine the business district in Los Angeles is slow at night as well. I do know areas in New York that are empty after 6:00 pm.

  • Jordan on April 7, 2016 at 10:46 AM

Alright Mister Shiver, if LA is so awesome, what the hell are you doing here?

  • Tomy Ironmane on April 7, 2016 at 10:58 AM

Probably got kicked to the curb in LA. Which is why he’s trying to swing his dick in this “quaint little town” … all I can say is this: Swing your dick around like that in the midwest, and someone’s gonna stomp on it. If you’re lucky, it’ll be your sidekick, because she promised not to use steel cleats

  • cheezeaddict on April 8, 2016 at 2:04 AM

Am I the only one who thinks his dialogue is suggestively villianish? “Easy to control” “The renaissance is over” “past its prime”

It’s like he’s gearing to better the city by taking it over himself.

  • David Johnston on April 8, 2016 at 12:26 PM

“One of” the biggest cities in the midwest says it’s not Chicago in drag. The next biggest city is Indianapolis, so probably a bit over 2 million people people.

Metro City is a fictionalized Detroit. You can see the Ren Cen in some comics (it’s actually in the background of this one, too, but the word bubble covers it up.) The logo at the top has the skyline, and there are a few other landmarks, too.

  • Alex Boston on April 8, 2016 at 1:56 PM

Has this fictionalized Detroit suffered through the bankruptcy of real world Detroit?

  • Sidekickgirl on April 10, 2016 at 5:06 PM

We’ve never discussed it. Ultimately, it’s probably not relevant. Economic or political quagmires wouldn’t likely make their way into the stories of these specific characters.

There are a lot of realities of real Detroit that don’t make it into fiction Metro City. For example, while the skyline, river, rencen, etc, are icons that are reflected in the art, the general layout of the city and its architecture are not. We have these kind of generic-cityscape backgrounds with all the skyscrapers, but real Detroit doesn’t have the kind of tightly packed super tall buildings that Chicago or New York does. We also don’t show all the one way streets and the radial design of the city.

It’s largely a practicality thing. Neither Laura nor I are educated in architecture or urban planning (though my brother, Jason the Webmaster, is!) and drawing a super accurate representation would be complicated, and not really add anything to the story.

The other nice thing about a fictionalized setting is that we can have whatever setting or backdrop we need for any given story arch without having to figure out if such a place actually exists. So it’s win-win.

I was in NYC staying at the Mariotte Marquis hotel in Times Square. Times Square is dead at 2 am, and NYC is the city that never sleeps. Pile that BS a little higher, and Val might feel the need to plug the source.

  • The passing critic on April 9, 2016 at 6:27 AM

Yeah Metro City really went downhill when Megamind retired. The funny thing that hit me when I read Shivs point of view is that I had similar experience when I moved to where I live now(Minus the control thing-but Yknow no superpowers n all).

I was really used to living in an area that even at night most areas never seemed to become entirely quiet so when I moved to a place where the pavements were practically rolled up by 7pm or so it struck me as really wierd and even vaguely creepy.Im going to play devils advocate for now since the evidence is stacking up that Shiv might be a competent and Jaded hero with crap social skills.

In fact part of the guys narkyness could come from his perception that his move here is more of an unofficial punishment, possibly for being too good while also being an unlikable arse.Think Nicholas Angel in the film Hot Fuzz.Personally I hope Val doesnt attack him cause that could cause a crapton of trouble for her and lets be honest,Almost ALL the heros shes met are just about as bad as this guy but just in different ways(Also if this guy actually is competent and worse winds up being as much a villain as people want him to be he could potentially freeze her lower half solid and sparta kick her in two in retaliation under the grounds of self defence and the knowledge that Vals power is that shes unkillable).

Wow this comments getting wall of texty… well Ill wrap things up by also pointing out that Shiver might also have a tainted view of the competence of heros in these parts since Illumina is heavily touted as a major hero here and has even saved the ENTIRE agency which doesnt make them look good in general since Illuminas got a less official but more well known reputation among the hero set for being dangerously useless,Hell if Shivers heard hero gossip he might even know that Illuminas put one sidekick in a morgue,Another in an asylum and a third one into a villain costume….Oh and the current ones only a keeper cause not dying is literally her superpower.

  • Foradain on July 20, 2017 at 8:36 PM

Actually, this Metrocity predates MegaMind’s. And all my experience in the area is from Champions: Online, where it’s called Millenium City. (But you can still look south across the river and see Canada ^_^ )

That said, I’m fairly sure there are places in L.A. (not just the metropolitan area, but actually inside the City Limits) where it gets as quiet as the portion of MC he’s seeing here. He just never saw them at night because, well, quiet.

But I’m hoping the attitude is a result of his transfer, and not the cause.

  • Katy on April 10, 2016 at 5:31 PM

I’m trying to look on the bright side. Like he isn’t making male-chauvinist pig remarks or making her leave Mr Bat II. But even I feel like punching him. Val has to be ready to punch the attitude out of him. It doesn’t take much to see why LA was happy to let him go.

Oh man i hope the fishnets show up and kick his ass HARD
