Sidekick Girl

Saving the City: Sans-Spandex

Possible alternative dialog for the last panel: "What the actual fuck?"

It’s pretty silly, but it could have been a lot worse.

XD the logic of sexist superhero costumes

  • Black on March 30, 2016 at 12:42 PM

It could be worse,Val could’ve ended up looking like a dominatrix!!!

  • Rexhinalt on March 30, 2016 at 9:54 PM

You say that as if such would have been a *bad* thing…

  • xero on April 2, 2016 at 3:20 AM

Actually that she probably would have been okay with

  • Ross on March 30, 2016 at 1:09 PM

Whoops. Sorta getting a 50 shades vibe from him in this comic, I hope Val decks him.

  • Phantomskyler on March 30, 2016 at 1:15 PM

Well, it could be worse. Yeah it looks like he slapped together pieces of Korra and Captain Cold cosplay costumes and forgot to add a proper shirt….But at least it has pants. XD

I appreciate that Agent Grey isn’t a complete tool of the system, and is sympathetic to the crap that someone as capable as Val has to put up with.

Also…Wow, out of all of the powers and gimmicks we guessed with a name like “Shiver,” none of us thought about cold powers. XD

  • Ragingagnostic on March 30, 2016 at 2:38 PM

Yes, it’s a bad costume. The vision-obscuring hood and exposed midriff are detrimental to proper fighting. However, Val didn’t exactly wear armor so having her stomach show isn’t much worse than a thin t-shirt that can be pierced by any blade. At least she’s not wearing a full skirt, cape or a top that accentuates her breasts. Maybe she can convince Admiral A**hat to let her length the top and drop the hood.

  • Rexhinalt on March 30, 2016 at 10:07 PM

I’d say the top was designed to show cleavage, if any were present (superhero trope-logic expects it to be present). Not well suited for a lean fighting chassis like SG…the hood worries me most of all; SG *needs* her peripheral vision!

Of course, the question now is, will he let her USE Mr. Bat? Plain wood doesn’t go well with Shiver’s overriding aesthetic. I’m predicting he’s going to assign her a more “suitable” weapon as well. Aluminum bat [I’m watching the baseball purists wince], at the very least, to fit his color scheme. Maybe he’ll have some techie toys as well?

  • Roguewing on March 30, 2016 at 3:59 PM

It could be a lot worse.
Could have been better. This guy’s headed one of two ways.
Either Mr. Bat is going to meet his face, or Asuro’s fist will

  • N/A on March 30, 2016 at 6:04 PM

Yep, jerk. Not even remarkably jerkish, just kinda stuck up.

  • Lukkai on March 30, 2016 at 8:28 PM

Heh, I was instantly getting water tribe vibes from that one as well. Though that top and exposed midriff is probably not something you’d want to wear in polar regions. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And it seems as if the costume can’t decide whether it should be sexystuff or practical. Bottom goes more towards the latter, top towards the first.

All in all it’s not the worst thing I’ve seen, truly. And in a very weird kind of way, it actually looks kinda good. Though that might also just be Val being able to actually pull it off somehow.

  • CheshireMadcat on March 30, 2016 at 8:41 PM

Not really that bad, the hood might cause issues but it could be worst. I got the feeling that he might be a cold based hero and he went for a cold based costume for a warm climate area. Shiver might be a competent hero but a pain to deal with.

  • Heather Jean on March 30, 2016 at 9:40 PM

One ASSumes (pun probably intended) that “asschecks” means “asscheeks.”

It’s actually not much different, coverage-wise, than her usual outfit, I suppose….

  • Aline1 on March 30, 2016 at 11:03 PM

It looks like a cross between a suit for a mister freeze henchmen and Avatar Korra’s clothes.

  • SolCannibal on March 31, 2016 at 7:15 PM

Well, she might be more baffled by the ridiculousness than really angry or anything.

  • Katy on April 4, 2016 at 10:29 AM

She *does* have some sweet abs. Maybe Shiver knows about Womb Power (http://www.geekxgirls.com/article.php?ID=1878)?

I got to go with everyone else and say, at least, it has pants.

  • Scuffles on March 31, 2016 at 1:30 AM

Well I was expecting that to be way worse. It’s not even super revealing – hiding abs like those is unfair to the world anyway.

Val might complain that it makes no sense, but I don’t think she actually gets to be really angry about it?

  • HakkyounoTenshi on March 31, 2016 at 9:35 AM

Why do I get the feeling that LA sent one of it’s problem children to Metrocity? If he’s really that skilled and successful why did they get rid of them.

That said, while that costume isn’t TERRIBLE (it could be a lot worse), it’s still horribly impractical for a fighter like Val. I don’t know whether Shiver expects Val to just stand there on the sidelines like some sort of cheerleader (he implied as much), or if he thinks she’s going to be able to fight with her peripheral vision obscured and sounds muffled from that hood.

  • The passing critic on March 31, 2016 at 9:57 AM

Yknow im starting to suspect this guy is actually probably going to be the most competent superhero that Vals ever met and that his real problem is he has no social skills which manages to nark off literally every hero he meets(Which is probably why he got transferred,Imagine how many heros hes offended by telling them exactly what he thinks of them),Itd be a funny comparison that the hero Val likes the most is the most stupid and the one she likes the least is actually really good at his job =).

Though Im not with Val on the costume complaints,By palling around with Illumina shes managed for a long time to circumvent the dodgy sidekick outfits and by anyones standards this one is almost practical-Also girlabs are always relevant<3

Hmm now that I think of it maybe Shivboy here is Vals superhero counterpart,The only difference being that as a hero he can mostly get away with snarking the more stupid aspects of the superhero agencys.

  • Laura on March 31, 2016 at 3:05 PM

This costume is absolutely inspired by Korra (Captain Cold, not as much to no), but only because they stole from us first:

But also it’s not like Val hasn’t cosplayed Korra before:

The Fantastic/Fabulous Four of a new era!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • That guy on March 31, 2016 at 4:35 PM

    Abducted Heroes VII

And now Val has a blue costume too ๐Ÿ˜€

Also, sweet jebus, you could grind meat on those.

  • Lukkai on March 31, 2016 at 6:42 PM

    Cold based hero (Shiver)?

Capable but socially uncouth and therefore complimented away to another town?

Yeah… I could see that. Definitely possible, both of those.

  • -skimmer- on March 31, 2016 at 7:22 PM

To be perfectly fair, she would probably bake herself alive in an actual eskimo costume. I would say he made a good call by making it as skimpy as possible.

  • T'Renn on March 31, 2016 at 8:33 PM

One possibly good thing about the hood is that it doesn’t actually have to be on her head all the time. When fighting seems likely she can just shake it off her head and fight. Then when the press shows up, she just pulls it up and poses in the background while the hero talks.

Also, more agreement that covering those abs would be “a crime against fashion!” (to quote a certain marshmallow pony.)

  • Ragingagnostic on April 6, 2016 at 3:09 PM

But the problem with a hood is that someone could yank it over her head and obscure her vision or yank her backward by it and slit her throat from the rear. That’s why Roman soldiers used to cut their hair short, after all.

I am now convinced that Ali Spagnola should get the part of Sidekick Girl in the television series.

  • Laura on March 31, 2016 at 11:24 PM

Personally, I’d push for an animated series.

  • Sidekickgirl on April 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    This, please, all the time.

  • Tilly the Hun on April 4, 2016 at 2:09 AM

This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen!

Sorry I haven’t been around much- that job the Illumina comic helped me get? I got a promotion INSTANTLY and have been crazy busy… Nothing glamorous, just lots of hard work

  • Laura on April 4, 2016 at 12:43 PM

    Holy damn and congratulations!

  • Sidekickgirl on April 4, 2016 at 4:39 PM

    Well done!

  • Andorxor on April 4, 2016 at 5:35 AM

You can have cold weather clothes or a skimpy clothes, but not both.

  • Sub on April 4, 2016 at 9:56 PM

Not as bad as I expected honestly. It covers her ass cheeks, just like she wanted, and show’s off her rather impressive musculature. Plus with her powers, it’s not like armour is a necessity, and it’s honestly not really much less clothing than she was currently wearing. The biggest problem I can see is that it looks like something I’d expect an ice/water type power user to wear. Plus, you know, it’s Side Kick girl so any outfit other than her plain clothes kinda looks odd.
