Franny has been our friend for years and years and is a truly amazing woman. Her intellectual achievements are matched only by her giant Geekness. Applaud her.

IT ME! I’m starting as a professor of communication at Oregon Tech this fall.
This is the first time I’ve written Dr. Franny Howes on a form. It looks so weird.

So maybe you could tell us all what your dissertation is all about? I know that I understand most of the words in the title by themselves, but all together I can’t quite grasp it.

My dissertation is about a lot of things…but probably the most relevant to this context is the idea that instead of acting like academics have all the answers to what comics are about, and can figure out everything about comics by just reading final published comics, we need to listen to what comics creators say about what they’re doing and pay more attention to their process of making them. As someone who’s both an academic and a comics creator, I kind of translate back and forth between the groups.
What’s the real life Franny like?
