So this is the end of the chapter, what’s next for Val and company?

  • Black Rose on March 29, 2017 at 12:21 PM

    What fun indeed!

So…why do I have the sinking fear that the agency is suddenly going to decide that Illumina doesn’t need Val anymore, and try to assign her to a different hero? I mean, isn’t ruining good things exactly what bureaucracies were created to do?

  • Ragingagnostic on March 29, 2017 at 3:58 PM

No offense, Uncle Ben. But these were low-level thugs, hardly super-powered villains. When Val and Illumina run into the latter, I’m sure both of their skill sets will come in handy. The agency will take that into consideration before doing anything rash.

How often do the “sidekicks” ever get recognized?

  • Dex on April 2, 2017 at 10:12 PM

From what i can tell i think they consider val something of either internal affairs or competent enough to be a stand alone hero since shes pretty much filled both roles in the past

  • Ragingagnostic on March 29, 2017 at 3:09 PM

What, no thanks for Val? Hey, coppers, there are TWO ladies standing there! But it was cute hearing Illumina squealing like that. She’s still the same bubbly personality under it all.

  • T'Renn on March 29, 2017 at 11:53 PM

Ragingagnostic: At least this time Val really WAS basically a spectator. 🙂

  • Ragingagnostic on March 31, 2017 at 1:38 PM

Fair point. But she did prevent two criminals from escaping (into the ether). Unless someone told the cops she didn’t help in any significant way, how are they to know she was merely a bystander? Was it only the criminals who knew that Val was the real threat whenever the duo showed up at a crime scene?

Don’t worry Uncle Ben! I don’t think that will happen. Besides, it wouldn’t be fair to Illumia- just because she’s got all these new powers having to go out and fight crime all on her lonesome. Girl’s gonna get overworked, feeling the stress of having to handle it on her own- that’s no good. Also, even the best superhero gets surprised sometimes. You need an extra pair of eyes out there, especially the eyes of someone who knows you really well with a strong trust between you. If those eyes are incapable of dying that also definitely helps.

What did the most for me was the third-to-last panel where Illumina is doing her own dramatic hair/mask-strap flow effect. Seeing her use her powers like that is a great touch of flair.

You’re right. (I didn’t notice that.) Who needs a cape?

I think Val will wind up becoming a hero before being reassigned from Mack. First, Mack and Val have gotten very close, and if Mack gets to the point where she doesn’t need a sidekick, she’ll probably help Val complete the application process for a promotion the same way Impact did for Hazel. Second, the Agency obviously values Val as more than “just a sidekick”, assigning her to take down Shiver, and they obviously see how much she’s helped Mack (especially after Mack saved the Agency’s rear end from her brother).

The thing about bureaucracies is that they are made up of people, and how incompetent or corrupt they tend to be usually follows those people who hold the power in them. Agent Grey obviously has a good deal of authority, and he’s been a witness to Val’s work, and he seems to be the competent middle manager type. Obviously, a major story shift where the decision gets taken out of Grey’s hands could happen, but given the way the story has gone and how the relationships have been developed, Val and Mack are most likely a permanent team until Val gets promoted.

Nono UncleBen Illumina has a very big reputation for being a moronic teamkiller to get past so the heros agency isnt going to let her walk the streets without a babysitter for a long time especially with gravitypowers an lasers available to her now.

Though the chances of Val getting eventually promoted to full partner just went way up now,Assuming she can teach Illumina how to fill out the forms and the offices accept forms written in crayon ^^.

If you look, she’s using her powers to have ‘picture prefect’ hair and ribbons. Illumina can go far because she understands showmanship with her powers.

I noticed some people are worried about Val now that she can’t compete in brawn or beauty. However, this comic seems to like poking fun at even the sterotypes of ditzy blonde. Mack is now in position to become a ‘Queen Bee.’ If she ends up fighting to keep Val, she will be surprised at the amount of pull she has.

  • Katy on April 3, 2017 at 8:28 AM

Twitch, I caught that she was using her powers on her hair and ribbons. She is exhibiting some very fine control of her powers. A concentrated light beam, keeping up her “hero hair”, and probably some other things we haven’t seen. I’d say she is off to a good start. 🙂
What won this page for me was Mack’s “Eeee!” after the cops took the criminals away. Though the last line of the page was a close second. It’s going to be fun to see what comes next.

…it’s causing me far more consternation than it should that I can’t decide whether “Lady” refers to Mack or God.

  • HakkyounoTenshi on April 24, 2017 at 9:06 PM

Lady is Val’s nickname for Mack. She’s used it in several previous arcs (the kidnapped hero’s and Champion and Centrifuge award arcs off the top of my head)
